Hi, my name is Shannon, and I have the Communication theme.
Communication is not about how loud your voice is. It's not about how well you can do the school cheer. It's not about trying to pack as many words as you can within the sentence. And it's definitely not about whether I can speak at a speed that can rival the Japanese bullet train.
For me, Communication is about sharing the thoughts, the emotions, the feelings that I have to the people around me. It’s about using words that I have carefully chosen and handpicked rather than words that someone has used a long time ago. I enjoy using images and metaphors when I share.
I liken Communication to painting. It's the art of using simple black and white words to paint beautiful and exciting images to draw your audience in, engage your readers, and also to share your excitement with everyone else. This is why I enjoy speaking in public, especially in class presentations. I was a motivational speaker for a while as well!
Whenever my friends ask me how I'm feeling, I always have this obsessive need to answer based on my own choice of words. For example, whenever my friend asks me if I'm feeling tired that day, I'll always just say, "No, I'm just feeling drained." Rather than using the words they have chosen, I prefer to use my own language to describe how I'm feeling even though they're essentially the same thing.
One way in which my Communication theme has helped the people around me is that I can help people express their feelings and emotions when they're at a loss for words.
One of the lessons that I've learned is that good communication has to be a 2-way thing. I need to take into account the emotions and reactions of my audience rather than just focusing on the right words to use. I hope to continue to develop my talents, not just for myself, but for the sake of serving others.
As someone with the Communication theme, you can count on me to make stories, conversations, and presentations come to life.
